Kinja'd!!!

Every evening I walk into my garage, look at the pile of parts on the table, look at the car, and think “there is no way those two will ever go back together.”

I am sure this is typical anxiety for a first-timer on a job like this, but damn... it is scary.

I haven’t made a ton of progress since my last update. A few more parts have come off, a LOT of parts have gone into the parts washer, and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! convinced me to go ahead with replacing the front timing gasket, which requires even more disassembly!

Tonight’s project is to do just that. The required gaskets should be in today, so we’re going to drop the oil pan, pull off the front timing cover, clean all that shit up, and re-assemble.

You can do it mate, just set yourself 60 minute intervals on where you work on the truck. Breaks the job into smaller bits and it seems less daunting, I felt the same way when I was working on my truck.

One thing at a time... you’ll get there.

In hindsight, it was relatively simple; but when I first had an engine rebuilt by a machine shop, I got back the block with heads, intake manifold, timing cover on, and not much else. I was highly skeptical I could put all the accessories, fuel injection, upper intake, exhaust, sensors, ignition, and everything back on in a way that would allow the engine to run. I just did one thing at a time, and eventually it came together.

And after all that, I had the spark plug wires on in reverse order - the correct order, but going the wrong way around the distributor cap. Once I sorted that out after mild panic... it ran perfectly for 6 or 7 more years before I sold it.

Good luck, take it slow, and get it done!

Thanks! Good advice. Yeah the sparkplug wires have me a little worried. They’re almost completely inaccessible with the engine back together, so I am going to check, recheck, rerecheck, and pray.

Also: This is how deep I am in this madness. You typed “One thing at a time... you’ll get there.” and I read “One more thing... while you’re in there.” No joke.

Yeah you’ll be alright. It’s always scary the first time you’ve got stuff in complete pieces, but you’ll be surprised at how much you remember when you come to put it back together.

Not everything, mind, but enough that you can work it out :)

What’s the old Car Talk joke? If you rebuild an air cooled VW engine enough times you’ll eventually have two?

You can do this! Like everyone else said, one thing at a time, take ALL the pictures, label everything, and be patient.
